El injerto óseo alveolar se ha convertido en parte importante del tratamiento de las fisuras labio-palatinas, aunque todavía existe controversia respecto a la edad en que debe realizarse. Se reportan buenos resultados tanto en los injertos primarios (18 meses) como secundarios (9-12 años). Pero, es en los injertos óseos secundarios donde la odontología pre y post quirúrgica muestra los mejores resultados. Si bien los injertos óseos en sus distintas etapas tienen ventajas y desventajas, cuando está indicado en el momento oportuno es sin duda un instrumento valioso en el tratamiento multidisciplinario y rehabilitador del paciente fisurado.

Bone graft is thought to be an important process in the treatment of alveolar cleft palate. However, there is still controversial opinion regarding the optimal time to perform alveolar bone grafting. Many studies show good results both in primary (18 months) and secondary (9-12 years) bone grafts. However, it is in secondary bone grafting where orthodontic “preparation” of the maxillary arch before and after surgery show the best results.
